The Big "M"

This week I had my appointment for the big "M", which has nothing to do with the Divine Ms. M, or even a bm (take a ducolax in the pm for a bm in the am- my dad was a physician). Yes, girls, the appointment where you take "your girls" in to be checked for signs of any activity, I suppose good or bad. While in the semi crowded waiting room of lone women and older couples (he is with her) someone's cell phone goes off. Now this isn't the kind of gentle buzzing or quiet ringing you might expect or hope for in a medical waiting room. This was a no wholes barred alarm the kind you hear when a firetruck is barreling down the road behind you. I saw and felt a collected jump by everyone as we all looked toward the alarm wondering if the waiting room might be on fire. Ever so slowly one of the few older men in the room reached into his oversized jeans and answered the phone eliminating the need for us to call for backup. It was at this point that my next blog entry came to me. What does a ring tone say about someone? I wondered if he might be a retired fireman and this tone brings back exciting anticipatory memories or maybe he just can't hear. Either way you think he might have thought to put the thing on silent while waiting, just not sure. Those in my inner circle all have their own tone/style. My husband has the standard ring tone that came with the phone. He is a no nonsense kind of guy. The phone simply has to have a ring, so why not just use the one that comes with the phone. My daughter a vintage kind of girl currently has the nostalgic ring tone reminding all who hear it of a kinder gentler time. Thanks, Cait. My son currently, well I don't think, has a ring tone. His phone goes off so much he has it on vibrate, that is when it has a charge and is working. Mechanical issues abound. My sisters have selected songs from the sixties,
like "Ain't no Mountain High Enough" assigning each family member that calls in a different song. Now, this takes some planning and is important to them and that is just the way they are. I appreciate that! I even have a friend whose son recorded his voice for her and yells, "Hey, get your phone!" as her ring tone. She loves and misses her son and this helps. I definitely understand that. As for me, I am a blend (which will be a topic of a future blog); mixing my husband's no nonsense tone with my daughter's nostalgia. That makes me happy.
As I left my yearly appointment (the girls were fine) I thought of how much these appointments remind me of a secret club meeting, but I'll save those thoughts for another entry. For now reflect on your ringtone. What does it say about you? 'til next time, Bridget

And so we begin...

I suppose I could say this is Day 1, but I'd feel a little bit like Capt. Kirk on the Starship Enterprise...so, I'll just say, "Welcome". For a while now I've been simmering on an idea of blog creation. You know a place for my thoughts and life observations, so that brings us to today. This was on my to do list and I'm all about lists, but that's for another day. For today I thought I'd let you know what you hopefully can expect in this corner of the world and why the title.

Erma Bombeck has always been my idol, next only to my number one mom. She looked at life a little like I do, finding humor in most situations. She was quick witted and strong and wise all at the same time. That's a beautiful thing. I hope I'm all those things, a little bit anyway, so my blog is my way of honoring her. If she was here today I would thank her for her unique perspective and no nonsense approach to living. It was refreshing.

Please feel free to comment at will. I look forward to it. Let me know how you like the entries and if you don't, be gentle. Thank you and the universe of satellites for this chance to write. It keeps me sane. 'til next time.
